EOPA: Enacting Solutions

Elected Officials to Protect America is a nonpartisan network of current and former elected officials who care deeply about protecting our planet, people, and democracy. EOPA educates through value-based media, with video production, podcasts, a newsmagazine that goes to 25,000 lawmakers, and over 70 mission-driven books published. We train lawmakers through our Certificate and Masters Degrees in Public Leadership with the University of San Francisco. And we mobilize elected officials to inspire strong policy internationally and locally. Lawmakers who are veterans and elected officials who represent frontline communities lead our mission.

  • Empowering communities with education and resources
  • Collaborating with governments and organizations globally
  • Fostering partnerships to create long-lasting change
  • Driving impactful campaigns for democracy and people

Our Origins: Why We Were Founded

How it started

EOPA’s story began on the frontlines of both military service and environmental challenges. While deployed to Fallujah, Iraq, Marine Corps infantry officer and former Representative Alex Cornell du Houx witnessed firsthand how climate change, water security, and safety are deeply interconnected.

The turning point

During a routine patrol on an extremely hot day, Alex’s HUMVEE was struck by a roadside bomb. Thankfully, the team survived the blast and apprehended the attacker, who turned out to be a desperate farmer affected by a record-breaking drought caused by climate change. His failed crops left him vulnerable, leading to his exploitation as a terrorist. This profound experience inspired Alex to enter public service, collaborate with fellow veteran lawmakers, and champion bipartisan environmental policies.

How we growned

At the Copenhagen UN climate negotiations, Alex met Dominic Frongillo, a New York Councilmember and climate leader. Dominic mobilized 1,000 elected officials across New York’s counties to successfully ban fracking statewide, setting a precedent for governments worldwide. His leadership also led to divesting $225 billion of state pension funds from fossil fuels and enacting nation-leading climate policies.

Together with veterans and leaders from communities on the frontlines of environmental crises, EOPA has expanded into a nationwide network of lawmakers dedicated to protecting both people and the planet.

How We Stand Out: What Makes Us Unique

EOPA is unlike any other organization in its approach and focus

Veteran Leadership:

EOPA is the sole national organization mobilizing veterans who are lawmakers on the environment. Pew and Gallup polls show veterans are the most trusted messengers in America after doctors and nurses.

Local-to-National Connections:

EOPA unites lawmakers from local, state, federal, and tribal governments. This collaboration ensures alignment across all levels of governance to effectively address the climate crisis.

Education and Advocacy:

Our peer-to-peer education, communications, and organizing enhances effectiveness and inspire action by generating visibility, building political will, and making it politically safer to act boldly

Fossil Fuels and Climate Justice:

EOPA uniquely addresses the national security, public health, and environmental justice impacts of fossil fuels and the climate crisis, ensuring its initiatives resonate across diverse communities.
